Hey, I’m Brittany!
You don’t have to be an artist to try art therapy. I believe that all humans are innately creative and that art has a deep connection within all of us. Whether art is a hobby of yours or you haven’t made art since grade school, it doesn’t matter – art therapy focuses on the transformative process of creating art, rather than what the final art product looks like. I am passionate about using art making in my sessions to help people express themselves and to explore and address their mental health needs through a calm, safe, and stress-free modality.
I have been practicing art therapy since 2015 and am a board certified and licensed art therapist in New Jersey. There is no person too old or too young for art therapy. I have worked with adults dealing with trauma, relationship issues, life stressors, and an array of mental health needs, including thought and mood disorders. I have worked with children as young as three in therapy, as well as children and parents, helping with behavioral issues and healthy interactions. I have found that art therapy is particularly useful in young children, as children at this age are primarily learning through creativity and play. There is no obstacle that can’t be reached through art – I have first-hand seen art therapy benefit people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental delays or learning disabilities, and even non-verbal children. Art therapy can help in building social skills, learning and utilizing healthy coping skills, expressing yourself when words are difficult, and even learning and understanding new or difficult emotions.
I take a strengths-based and humanistic approach in my therapy. I try to focus on the present in each session and am person-centered, meaning your therapy time is yours and I will meet you “where you’re at” on that day and time. Some days you may not want to talk and we can just quietly make art, other times we may explore a new art medium or I can teach you a new skill, sometimes I may give you an art directive to address something specific, other days you may just want to talk and not create and that’s fine too. I will always approach you judgement free and give you a safe space to grow, learn, and create.
