Anxiety

(Racing thoughts, rumination, excessive worry)

Anxiety looks and feels differently to everyone. Anxiety can be the underlying feeling of something that is unsettled or something you are trying to avoid. Anxiety can come in the form of racing thoughts, uneasy feelings, trouble focusing, excessive worry or panic attacks. Anxiety can cause an array of physical sensations in your body: sweating, rapid heart rate, flushed face. Yet regardless of how anxiety “looks” and “feels”, it is uncomfortable to all of us! Anxiety can impact our ability to relax and stay in the present moment. Sometimes it’s gone on for so long we feel that it is normal or “how I’ll always be!”. But regardless of whether it feels “normal” or not, prolonged exposure to anxiety can also be linked to stress and medical issues.

There are many coping skills used to help lessen the physical and emotional feelings related to anxiety (i.e. mindfulness, grounding and breathing techniques).

Depression

(low mood, lack of motivation & energy, low self-esteem)

Depression can deplete our energy and motivation. Depression can negatively impact our mood, confidence and self-esteem. The onset of depression can be related to a stressor and negatively impacts our view of ourselves, our feelings and our behaviors. Depression symptoms may include: feelings of hopelessness, sadness, anger and physical symptoms of lack of motivation, concentration and sleep. Depression causes us to respond in isolation and avoid daily tasks.

Trauma

(difficulty trusting others, low self-worth, trouble making/keeping relationships, unidentified triggers, always on alert, flashbacks)

Trauma is our mind & body’s normal response to an unnormal situation. There are many different levels of trauma, and all impact each person differently. Prolonged effects of trauma causes our nervous system to respond subconsciously, putting our body through sometimes unnecessary stress and anxiety. Trauma distorts how we view the world, safety and people.
